The Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) is the comprehensive data protection legislation enacted in South Africa. It is based on the formation and data protection laws of the European Union and aims to protect the constitutional right to privacy.
POPIA imposes various responsibilities on responsible parties and provides remedies to persons whose rights have been infringed. While the majority of POPIA’s provisions came into force on 1 July 2020, the Act will only come into full force on 1 July 2021.
This grace period is to allow businesses the opportunity to become fully compliant with POPIA. However, businesses should aim to have their compliance procedures in place as soon as possible and must ensure that their employees are familiar with their new obligations in terms of POPIA.
While the protection of privacy is not a new concept, the regulations and procedures that are set out in POPIA requires special attention to ensure that personal data is safe.
This course will help explain the primary aspects that are covered in POPIA and offer you guidance regarding the processes and documentation you need to have in place by 1 July 2021.
